Traveling to Nuremburg, Germany

Nuremburg

Traveling south from Berlin, Nuremburg is our next stop on this vacation in Germany. Once a picturesque city embodying the best of medieval architecture, Nuremburg was bombed severely in World War II. Its majestic buildings were bruised and destroyed, but with many years of restoration, Nuremburg is back in shape. This section suggests must-see places in Nuremburg and details the best place to stay during your visit.

Must See Attractions

While in Nuremburg, visit the German National Museum to tour the largest collection of German art and cultural artifacts in the country. The German National Museum was founded in 1852 and protects German art in all of its forms: paintings, sculptures, tapestries, musical instruments, and even monuments. As you approach the museum, you will notice 27 towering columns guarding its entrance. The columns are a part of a monument known as the Street of Human Rights, and were designed by Dani Karavan. Each column displays an excerpt from the United Nations Human Rights charter and is transcribed in a variety of different languages. Visit www.gnm.de/indexE.htm for detailed information.

For a more interactive museum experience, visit the Spielzeugmuseum. This museum is dedicated to Nuremburg’s time-honored tradition of toy creation and houses over 3,000 different types of toys. Although the museum displays old favorites like rag dolls and wooden trains, it also welcomes the modern delights of video and computer games which are available for everyone to try. While touring the Spielzeugmuseum, don’t miss the opportunity to view the “Tin World” display, which is fashioned out of hundreds of miniature cars and old-fashioned model railways.

If you seek a romantic getaway, tour the Kaiserburg Castle, which overlooks Nuremburg from sandstone cliffs. Kaiserburg Castle is known for being one of the largest castles in Germany. Although it was devastated by bombers in World War II, it has recovered beautifully with an almost complete renovation. Tourists often find the most breathtaking views of Nuremburg from the balconies and corridors of Kaiserburg Castle and maintain that it is one of the most beautiful landmarks in the city.
